Never bites. I've tried a number of blends that tout themselves as a "replacement" for Balkan Sobranie and I dreamed of what the original must be like. Very tasty and I feel this blend is one most any pipe smoker would findpleasurable. What I wanted to do is to see if this tobacco lived up to my memory of it. Only a few got somewhat near to it. Latakia is leading with Oriental/Turkish and Virginia supporting. In the present day, this has gone out of production and is considered the standard to which all balkans are measured. It may need a couple of relightings, but after each one of them the taste seems to get even better and richer. The Sobranie has the properties of the newer Sasieni in full measure; but, if there is a difference: I would describe it as softer, or less sharp! I gave it a star because I think that it is probably a good blend,but it's always gone instantly. Rarely, is that the case with a balkan. Similar Blends: My favorite, Wilke's Crystal Palace. I know of no other in which this essentially condimental tobacco is so much to the fore. Perfectly worth buying here, and wildly overpriced on the secondary market everywhere else. For my tastes, the #1 of all of these Hall of Fame blends. The resurrection of this blend has been so well received there are continuing shortages. Probably nearly forty percent Turkish leaf maximum. Under no circumstances did it live up to everything I have heard and read all this time, unless it is not the same blend any more. If you can lay your hands on a pouch, do so. Gallaher's Balcan Sobranie lit up fast and quite uniform and first puffs hit me with the smoky Latakia, not quite as strong as I expected but still strong enough to be enjoyable! They all have a little bit of the same taste, something typical Dunhill. . Not so heavy, incredibly smooth tobacco, giving a gentle sweetness and a dry, salty smoking that reminds me of Syrian Latakia.It was smoked easily until the end of the bowl. A typical English blend, in the vein of Dunhill London Mixture and 965, but more rounded and less full in its taste. I thought to myself "Yes, this is exactly what my palate envisioned pipe smoking would be, and it is Good.". Personally I've never smoked that real old version and I think there was not so much wrong with the pouch version. I bought some in the spring from Boswells in Chambersburg, PA. Give it some time to age, and it's easily one of the best Balkans on the market. I find Nightcap, Penzance and Black Mallory to be more complex. The 1990s and later versions have drier in taste than it was in the 1980s, due to the decrease in the red Virginia, which disappeared by the mid-1990s. It only took four years to find but now I know. Sobranie of London was able, in the old days, to procure the finest Yenidje tobacco. In comparison with all those others, Sobranie certainly stands up well, even at this late date. The orientals are definitely the main player here, they're spicy and complex. Not as heavy on the Latakia as 759 and plenty of that marvelous old Yenidje leaf to sate the palate. But I have since then tried a very well-kept tin from (I think) the 40s or 50s, which was a little dry (but moistened back up with a small piece of orange peel), inherited by a friend of mine by his late grandfather.
